बालकांड
त्रिषष्टितमस्सर्गः

पूर्णेवर्ष सहस्रेतु व्रतस्नानं महामुनिम् ।
अभ्यागच्छन् सुरास्सर्वे तपः फलचिकीर्षवः ॥

स॥ सहस्र वर्ष पूर्णे व्रत स्नानं तु महामुनिम् तपः फल चिकीर्षवः सुराः सर्वे अभ्यागच्छन् ॥

As the seer took ceremonial bath after completing thousand years of penance all the Devas arrived to present him the fruit of his penance.

अब्रवीत् सुमहातेजा ब्रह्मा सुरुचिरं वचः ।
ऋषित्वमसि भद्रंते स्वार्जितैः कर्मभिः शुभैः ॥

स॥ ब्रह्मा सु महातेजा सुरुचिरं वचः अब्रवीत् । भद्रं ते। ऋषि त्वमसि स्वार्जितैः कर्मभिः शुभैः ॥

The highly radiant Brahma spoke with sweet words." May all be well with you. With your efforts of good and auspicious deeds you have attained the position of a 'Rishi' .

तमेवमुक्त्वा देवेशः त्रिदिवं पुनरभ्यगात् ।
विश्वामित्रो महातेजा भूयस्तेपे महातपः॥

स॥ तं एवं उक्त्वा देवेशः त्रिदिवं पुनः अभ्यगात् । भूयः विश्वामित्रः महातपः तेपे ॥

Having said so Brahma,the Lord of all Devas went away. Then the highly radiant Viswamitra started great penance.

ततः कालेन महता मेनका परमाप्सराः ।
पुष्करेषु नरश्रेष्ठ स्नातुं समुपचक्रमे ॥

स॥ हे नरश्रेष्ठ ! ततः महता कालेन परम अप्सराः मेनका पुष्करेषु स्नातुं समुपचक्रमे ।

Oh Best of men ! After some time Menaka the foremost of Apsarasas came to Pushkar to bathe.

तां ददर्श महातेजा मेनकां कुशिकात्मजः ।
रूपेणाप्रतिमां तत्र विद्युतं जलदे यथा ॥

स॥ महातेजा कुशिकात्मजः रूपेण अप्रतिमं जलदे विद्युतं यथा तां मेनकां ददर्श ॥

Then the highly radiant son of Kusika saw Menaka of unparalleled beauty like a lightning in the waters.

दृष्ट्वा कंदर्पवशगो मुनिः तां इदमब्रवीत् ।
अप्सरः स्वागतं ते अस्तु वसचेह ममाश्रमे ॥

स॥ कंदर्प वशगो मुनिः तां दृष्ट्वा इदं अब्रवीत् । अप्सरः ते स्वागतं अस्तु । इह ममाश्रमे वस च ॥

Bowled over by her beauty the sage spoke to her as follows." Oh Apsarasa welcome to you. You can stay in my Ashram".

अनुगृहीष्व भद्रं ते मदनेन सुमोहितम् ।
इत्युक्ता सा वरारोहा तत्र वासमथाकरोत् ॥

स॥ भद्रं ते । सुमोहितं (मां) अनुगृहीष्व । इत्युक्ता सा वरारोहा तत्र वासं अथाकरोत् ।

"May all be well with you. I am infatuated with you. Please favor me". Having been spoken thus the Apsarasa stayed on to live with him'.

तस्यां वसंत्यां वर्षाणि पंच पंच राघव ।
विश्वामित्राश्रमे राम सुखेन व्यतिचक्रमुः ॥

स॥ हे राघव । तस्यां वसंत्यां पंच पंच वर्षाणि हे राम विश्वामित्र आश्रमे सुखेन व्यतिचक्रमुः ।

'O Raghava ! For ten years of springtime she lived in Viswamitra's Ashram happily'

अथकाले गते तस्मिन् विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः।
सव्रीड इव संवृत्तः चिंताशोकपरायणः ॥

स॥ अथ काले गते विश्वामित्रः महामुनिः सव्रीड इअव संवृत्तः चिंताशोकपरायणः अभवत् ।

'After some time the great seer felt ashamed and deeply saddened'

बुद्धिः मुनेः समुत्पना सामर्षा रघुनंदन ।
सर्वं सुराणां कर्मैतत् तपोपहरणं महत् ॥

स॥ हे रघुनंदन ! एतत महत् तपोपहरणं सर्वं सुराणां कर्मः (इति) मुनेः बुद्धि समुत्पना॥

'Oh Raghunandana ! The sage realized that this was an act of Devas to steal the power of penance acquired by him.'

अहोरात्रापदेशेन गता संवत्सरा दश ।
काममोहाभि भूतस्य विघ्नो अयं प्रत्युपस्थितः ॥

स॥ अहो अपदेशेन दश संवत्सरा रात्रा गता । काममोहाभिभूतस्य अयं विघ्नः प्रत्युपस्थितः ॥

" Oh because of this failure ten years have been lost in few nights. Being infatuated all efforts have been disturbed"

विनिश्श्वसन् मुनिवरः पश्चात्तापेन दुःखितः ।
भीता मप्सरसं दृष्ट्वा वेपंतीं प्रांजलिं स्थिताम् ॥
मेनकां मधुरैर्वाक्यैः विसृज्य कुशिकात्मजः ।
उत्तरं पर्वतं राम विश्वामित्रो जगाम ह ॥

स॥ विनिश्श्वसन् मुनिवरः पश्चात्तापेन दुःखितः अभूत् । वेपंतीं प्रांजलिं भीता मेनकां अप्सरसं दृष्ट्वा मधुरैर्वाक्यैः विश्रुज्य च ।हे राम ! विश्वामित्रः उत्तरं पर्वतं जगाम ह ॥

Thinking like that and sighing he was full of remorse and sorrow. He then saw Menaka the Apsarasa with folded hands shivering in fear. He spoke to her with gracious words and sent her away. Then he moved to the mountains in the northern direction.

सकृत्वा नैष्ठिकीं बुद्धिं जेतु कामो महायशाः ।
कौशिकीतीरामासाद्य तपस्तेपे सुदारुणं ॥

स॥ महायशाः कामो जेतुः बुद्धिं सकृत्वा कौशिकीतीरमासाद्य सुदारुणम् नैष्ठिकीं तपः तेपे ॥

'Then that famous one deciding to overcome desire, performed severe penance with strict discipline on the banks of river Kausiki'.

तस्य वर्ष सहस्रंतु घोरं तप उपासतः ।
उत्तरे पर्वते राम देवतानं अभूत्भयम्॥

स॥ हे राम ! उत्तरे पर्वते सहस्रं वर्ष घोरं तप उपासतः तस्य देवतानां भयं अभूत् ॥

'Oh Rama ! As he performed that severe penance for thousand years the Devas were scared'.

आमंत्रयन् समागम्य सर्वे सर्षिगणास्सुराः ।
महर्षि शब्दं लभतां साध्वयं कुशिकात्मजः ॥

स॥ सर्वे सुराः स ऋषिगणाः समागम्य आमंत्रयन् कुशिकात्मज मह₹हिशब्दं लभतां साध्वयं॥

'All the Devas and the legions of Rishis congregated and decided that Viswamitra deserves to be called "Maharshi".

देवतानां वचः श्रुत्वा सर्वलोक पितामहः ।
अब्रवीन्मधुरं वाक्यं विश्वामित्रं तपोधनम् ॥

स॥ सर्वलोक पितामहं देवतानां वचः श्रुत्वा तपोधनं विश्वामित्रं मधुरं वाक्यं अब्रवीत् ॥

'Then having heard the Devas Brahma , the Lord of all the worlds, spoke to Viswamitra with sweet words'.

महर्षे स्वागतं वत्स तपसोग्रेण तोषितः ।
महत्त्वम् ऋषिमुख्यत्वं ददामि तव कौशिक ॥

स॥ हे कौशिक ! वत्स तव उग्रेण तपः तोषितः ।महर्षे स्वागतं तव । महत् ऋषिमुख्यः त्वं ददामि ।

" O Kausika ! Son ! I am please with your severe penance. Oh Maharshi welcome to you. I am presenting to you the tittle of Maharshi."

ब्रह्मणस्सवचः श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकेश्वरस्य ह ।
नविषण्णो न संतुष्ठो विश्वामित्रः तपोधनः ॥

स॥ स सर्वलोकेश्वरस्य ब्रह्मण वचः श्रुत्वा तपोधनः विश्वामित्रः न विषण्णो न संतुष्ठो अभवत् ।

'Hearing those words of Brahma, the Lord of all the worlds Viswamitra was neither happy nor unhappy'.

प्रांजलिः प्रणतो भूत्वा सर्वलोक पितामहम्।
प्रत्युवाच ततो वाचं विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ॥

स॥ सर्वलोकपितामहम् प्रांजलिः प्रणतः भुत्वा ततः महामुनिः विश्वामित्रः वाचं प्रत्युवाच ॥

Bowing to the father for all the worlds and folding his hands in respect he( Viswamitra) spoke to him in reply.

महर्षिशब्दमतुलं स्वार्जितैः कर्मभिश्शुभैः ।
यदि मे भगवानाह ततोsहं विजितेंद्रियः ॥

स॥ यदि स्वार्जितं शुभैः कर्मभिः अतुलं महर्षि शब्दं भगवान् आह ततः अहं विजितेंद्रियः (इति) ॥

"Happy with my own effort of good and auspicious deeds , if the Bhagavan called me Maharshi then I consider myself having overcome the lure of senses."

तं उवाच ततो ब्रह्म न तावत् जितेंद्रियः ।
यतस्व मुनिशार्दूल इत्युक्त्वा त्रिदिवं गतः ॥

स॥ ततः ब्रह्म तं उवाच । न तावत् जितेंद्रियः । मुनिशार्दूल यतस्व । इत्युक्ता त्रिदिवं गतः ॥

'Then Brahma told him ," Oh Best of Munis ! Do not consider yourself to have overcome the lure of senses , keep trying". Having said so he went back the abode of Devas'.

विप्रस्थितेषु देवेषु विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
ऊर्ध्वबाहुः निरालंबो वायुभक्षः तपश्चरन् ॥

स॥ देवेषु विप्रस्थितेषु महामुनिः विश्वामित्रः निरालंबो ऊर्ध्वभाहुः वायुभक्षः तपः चरन् ॥

'After all Devas left, the great seer raising his shoulders and standing without any support performed severe penance with only air as his food'.

घर्मे पंचतपाभूत्वा वर्षाकाससंश्रयः ।
शिशिरे सलिलस्थायी रात्यहानि तपोधनः ।
एवं वर्ष सहस्रं हि तपो घोरमुपागमत् ॥

स॥ घर्मे पंच तपाभुत्वा वर्षात् आकाश संश्रयः शिशिरे सलिल स्तायी रात्रि अहनि तपोधनः तपः तेपे। एवं सहस्र वर्षं घोरतपं उपागमत् हि ॥

'He performed penance in the peak summer being in the middle of the five fires, in the rainy season with only sky as his shelter, in the deep winter standing the cold waters. Thus he performed the penance for thousand years'.

तस्मिन् संतप्यमानेतु विश्वामित्रे महामुनौ ।
संभ्रमः सुमहानासीत् सुराणां वासवस्य च ॥

स॥ विश्वामित्रे महामुनौ संतप्य मानेतु तस्मिन् सुराणां वासवस्य च संभ्रमः सुमहान् आसीत् ॥

'When the great seer performed such severe penance the Devas and Indra were perturbed and concerned'

रंभां अप्सरसं शक्रः सर्वैर्मरुद्गणैः ।
उवाचात्महितं वाक्यं अहितं कौशिकस्य च ॥

स॥ शक्रः सर्वैर्मरद्गणैः रंभाम् अप्सरसं आत्महितं कौशिकस्य अहितं च वाक्यं उवाच ॥

Then Indra along with other Maruts called upon Rambha the Apsarasa to work for the benefit of Devas and deter Viswamitra.

॥ इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये बालकांडे त्रिषष्टितमस्सर्गः ॥

|| Thus ends the sixty third Sarga of Balakanda in Valmiki Ramayan ||
